Undecided on whether life begins at conception

President Obama on Abortion

Q: Do you personally believe that life begins at conception?

A: This is something that I have not come to a firm resolution on. I think it’s very hard to know what that means, when life begins. Is it when a cell separates? Is it when the soul stirs? So I don’t presume to know the answer to that question.

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you..."Jer1:5

  1. Just came across your blog, and I can't help but say:

Why don't you send your President that scripture instead of being pompous about your suprerior knowledge of the Word?

Just because you know something to be true doesn't mean that every one else should know it just by default.

Even if Obama professes to be a Christian or to read scriptures - it doesn't mean that he has the proper revelation of the scripture.

  2. Ya know... I added no comments of my own to that post. None. President Obamas words and then the Word of God. No commentary at all and yet you gather that I am pompous and superior?

I actually considered writing how I felt but do feel a bit convicted about slamming our current President on the WWW. Just the facts.........

  3. Anonymous: It's amazing how quoting scripture gets a person's dander up. "Pomposity" would have been to assume the President of the United States would even take the time to read a scripture if it had been sent to him. From what I understand, he's quite a busy man, and I would assume much too busy to read everything one person might send him.

It's a good thing you didn't visit my blog during the American election. I can't imagine what kinds of names you would have come up with for me.

    Have a good day.

  4. "Let the Word of God be true, and every man a liar..."
    Just another Scripture...

A boss asked once - where does life begin? - at conception, was my answer. He thanked me. He had never read the Bible, but was not sure and wanted a straight answer. He took it and they had a child. Out of their well planned schedule, but in the will of God.

  5. I believe in the scriptures, just as you do I'm sure. I also believe in the sanctity of life, which starts at conception. Your quoting scripture is not the reason for my observation and comment by any means.

The reason why I made the point of attitude was the simple fact that you had to quote Obama and his undecided opinion on the matter.

Why? What is the purpose of doing that? To make him look like a misinformed loser that doesn't know his Bible?

If you wanted to make a point that you believe life starts at conception, why not just post that scripture, period.

I think it was wise of you to follow your conviction and not add your personal commentary. However, the fact that you felt the need to make Obama's undecided opinion the basis of your post leads me to believe that you are a little high in your own self righteousness.

I am not taking offence to your blog by any means. Just a simple observation. I hope you can take it in good graces. I fully understand that this is your blog and you have the right to post whatever, however you like. Just a meaningless passer-byer's opinion. :o)

    God bless.

Im not sure he is misinformed and I sure dont think he is a loser. I think he may just be a politician.:-)

I wanted to make a couple of points. To be honest, I dont seek to be ‘balanced’ on my blog. I never claim to be fair to all sides involved.

Self righteous? Probally, but not on this post, I didnt even comment on it until now.

If you beleive that life begins at conception and you are a Christian. How can you support Obama? Being pro-abortion is a deal breaker for most Christians. Is is just because hes black?

  7. I appreciate your keeping a level head about the discussion. I hope you don't think I commented just to stir trouble or make anyone upset. I'm also not someone who hides behind the anonymous name to be a coward. It really is for a serious reason that I don't disclose my name. (Just thought you should know)

I am not "pro Obama" when it comes to some of the moral issues he hasn't taken a clear stand on. I don't feel that I am defending his beliefs. That being said, I do think he is an intelligent man that will service the U.S. to the best of his ability. My respect for him has nothing to do with his ethnic back ground. Also, from the forums I've read and discussions I've heard relating to his opinion on abortion: I don't believe that he is truly 100% pro-abortion. He is putting more efforts into PREVENTING unwanted pregnancies, before they happen. I just don't believe (in my ignorance) that a father of two girls could possibly think it's ok to kill a child, deep within himself. Despite of what he may say to the public. I think he HAS to say certain things to maintain his status as a democrat. But like I said, that's just my ignorant opinion.

Back to the topic: I think we as Christians need to hold our beliefs closely, but also remember that not every one has had the great priviledge we have had to experience Jesus Christ first hand. When one doesn't KNOW Christ fully, there is no way they can think in the same manner as we do. It's not in their spiritual make up, so to speak. So when "we" (Christians) make verbal attacks on those who simply don't know better, it gives us the image of superiority and self righteousness. It's that image that DETERS sinners from church, Christians and the like.

I suppose I let all my feelings out on your blog, when really it's towards every one I've seen "attack" him. I understand that this post wasn't about attacking Obama, though. So don't take that comment personally.

Thank you for letting me be apart of this discussion.

    All the best!

  8. Anon,

I really appreciated what you said about how we as Christians often forget to extend grace to non believers. It is true we do need to remember where our help comes from.

Im sure we all can agree that the powers that be are ordained of God and the Bible tells us to pray for those that are in office.

Romans 13:1 Let every soul be in subjection to the higher powers: for there is no power but of God; and the powers that be are ordained of God.

    He is in control!

Thank you all for the comments. Come back any time.;-)

  9. Hold on though. If we take the scripture you are quoting as evidence of when life begins, then life begins even before conception ("Before I formed you in the womb I knew you..."). So even unfertilised ova are sacred according to this logic? So every time a woman has her menses, she is commiting infanticide? I think the President is more correct to be undecided than to take what is simply an intepretation of scripture as the rightful position on a very sensitive and important issue. The Bible does not exhibit a strict adherence to the sanctity of life at all - for example, causing a miscarriage in a pregnant woman is subject to a fine payable to her husband, but murder is punishable by death:
Exodus 21:22: "When people who are fighting injure a pregnant woman so that there is a miscarriage, and yet no further harm follows, the one responsible shall be fined what the woman's husband demands, paying as much as the judges determine. 23 If any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe."
So, at best, the Bible does not give a clear line on this.
